Amelia Island Project

The weather was looking great on Wednesday.  It was the first clear, cool day we have had since spring and I wanted to go for a ride.  The owner of the house we have under construction on the ocean there has been wanting me to ride up to review progress, so I used that as an excuse to make the trip.

The ride up was into a North Easter, with a strong breeze blowing in my face all the way.  Bridges are where the impact of the wind is the highest, but Rocket and I made it easily.  We rode my usual route over Hecksher Drive to A1A at the ferry.  Then up through the Talbot Islands and Amelia Island, past the Amelia Island Plantation and Ritz Carlton to the beachfront property.

There, the house has been progressing nicely with the roof sheathing going on, probably finishing this week.  The standing seam metal roof is scheduled to go in in two weeks, finally buttoning up the house as the rains have made their mark on the lumber.

Sarah had called to say she had business and for me to get dinner on my own.  I was looking forward to stopping at Chowder Teds on Hecksher Drive but found the tides had closed it down for the day.  Highest tides we have had here in many years.

7BSC Apalachicola Ride

This past weekend had the 7 Bridges Scooter Club take a group ride to Apalachicola, a ride I have taken twice already this year.  It has proven to me to be one of the best motorcycle/scooter rides you can take from Jacksonville as the route is easy while being picturesque, and the destination a beautiful, restored town on the gulf.  The oysters aren't bad either.

We left our typical meeting place when heading west, the McDonalds on Chaffee Road and went towards Macclenny on US90.

Then took my back roads route to Lake Butler where we stopped for a break.

A place where we stop often.  40 miles from drinking coffee.

From there the route took us to Fort White via 18, then Branford and Mayo, where we stopped for gas, to Perry.

We went through there and chose Ouzts Too in Newport for lunch.  Ouzts is a colorful oyster house, typical of this part of the state.  It felt like we were dining fifty years ago.

Continuing west, 98 hits the inland waterways of the gulf just south of Panacea, where the views become even better as the road runs right along the water for the last 40 miles of the ride.  A final gas stop in Carrabelle got us filled and we made it to the Gibson Inn in Apalachicola at around 3:00.

We didn't make it to Lynn's this time, but I got this photo as we passed.

Once we set up, Jami rides up to visit.  She had ridden by herself from Pensacola and I can now add another friend met through the scooter community.  She is going to be a great scooter friend as she is a true enthusiast.  Several of us wanted to go for a ride so she led me, brother David, 83 year old Howard and Kevin to the wonderful Indian Point Raw Bar, where we had appetizers of oysters, shrimp and a burger for Kevin.  After we arrived there, Shane and Mark showed up too as he had seen us riding past his hotel and decided to try to catch us.

Excellent oysters, to go along with shrimp and beer.  What could be better?

After eating she took us down a long road to Indian Point, where we enjoyed the view and a minute to soak it in.

On the ride back, I could see that Jami was testing the top speed of her Vespa Sprint, a beautiful 150 cc scooter.  The fastest she got to was a true 63 mph.  Not bad for a 150, but I think the saddle bags cost her 1 mph in aerodynamic drag.

We came back to find social hour in full swing on the porch of the Gibson.  This place has an old bar and wrap around porch that makes it almost perfect for our type of gathering.  Alcohol was flowing, a little too much for a couple, but we all survived.

Social Hour at the Gibson.  Perfect place for a small gathering.

The entire group got back together and walked to dinner at Up The Creek, a waterfront restaurant a few blocks away.  Food and service were ok, but we all had fun being together.

A short walk to our dinner destination

We ate on the porch

Once back at the Gibson, several of us watched Florida beat Ole Miss in a very important football game and off to bed.

I shared a room with Kevin, a massive snorer.  At 2:30 AM I got up, walked downstairs to Razzo parked out front to retrieve ear plugs.  It was amazing how well they worked as I slept to 7:30.

We had breakfast at the hotel, some went to a restaurant for something better.

I then took the opportunity to ride around the beautiful town.  As an architect, I appreciate the old Florida houses and businesses.  Old preserved buildings abound.

That says it all!

Nice bookstore too.

Then we pointed east for the 250 mile ride home.  It was uneventful except for trying to find a restaurant open on Sunday in Perry.  Elaina and I chose Mexican.

Heading out.

Apalachicola Again

Russ and the others in 7 Bridges Scooter Club have heard enough about my two rides to Apalachicola so far this year.  We had decided to use it as the overnight destination for my planned Fireball 500, but recently decided to just have our fall club ride split in two with one weekend ride to Apalachicola and another to Bradenton.  The Fireball will have to wait.

We now have 16 riders signed up for this one.  13 will be following me from Jacksonville for the 240 mile ride.  The other three will meet us on the way or once we arrive on Saturday afternoon.  One, Jami Sanderson, will be new to our rides as she is riding over from Pensacola.  We all are looking forward to meeting her and hope she will enjoy our company.

Most of us will be staying in the Gibson.  Others scattered about but we will get together for meals and maybe a ride on Sunday morning.

I have been wondering which scooter to ride.  I first wanted to ride Rocket as it has been good lately.  But I just put new tires on Razzo, so it should be ready.  It is more reliable so it would be less likely to cause issues over the distance.  Vanessa has new tires too, but I have not gotten her registered, licensed and insured since the purchase.  It would be a good test for her.  I could also take the Honda as it has been idle for a very long time.  We'll see.

New Shoes for Vanessa

Vanessa was strutting her new shoes today.  Michelin Power Pure 120 front, 140 rear.

I think she likes them.

Razzo is getting new shoes too.  I will put them back on tonight.

These are for the Apalachicola ride this weekend, UnRally in two weeks and Iron Butt in three weeks.

The River House

For a change of pace, it is back to me and what I do for a living.  I am an architect.  I design houses along with additions, renovations and historic preservation.  This has been my occupation since graduating from college in 1979.

There is a house that I designed that is currently under construction.  It is turning out to be the favorite of all the houses I have done as it combines the qualities that I find important in my work.  The design is done in an Old Florida style. Simple shape, wrap around porch, white siding, metal roof, etc.  It evokes houses built in the state in the early 1900's.

The clients are a young couple.  The husband is the son of clients I have worked for since 1988 and this marks the fifth major residential project I have designed for the family.  Any architect would be thrilled with such a relationship.

The property is in Jacksonville, on the St. Johns River in my neighborhood of Avondale.  The river location is where The Ortega River and Fishweir Creek joins the St. Johns, with views from every side of the house (thus the wrap around porch).  It would be difficult to find a better piece of property in Jacksonville.

We had some issues in getting the building permit.  The site is deemed to be in a flood plain that involves moving water.  So this house sits on concrete pilings.  These extend 35 feet into the ground.  In addition to that the minimum floor elevation of the house is approximately six feet higher than the ground was before construction, making for many truckloads of fill before beginning the work.  But this height enhances the views and presence of the house.

The contractor is a fine friend of mine.  He was given the contract after I suggested to the owners that his company would be the best choice for the work.  They have done a spectacular job so far.

With the ongoing construction, the house gets better every day.  I don't usually like visiting my construction sites, but this one draws me to visit often.

Getting Ready for the Iron Butt

With an Iron Butt Saddle Sore 1000 lurking just over three weeks away, I have to get started on scooter preparations.  Last night I took the wheels off Vanessa to take to Mike McNeil for new tires.  He will do that today, then the same for Razzo tonight for its tires tomorrow.

After that, I have belts and rollers coming from George's Scooter Parts Co.  I will do that next week along with oil changes.  With that, we should be ready to take on Florida.

My new garage has decent lighting.  Enough to make it a good workshop.

7BSC Scoot-A-Cue

Once a year the scooter club puts on a picnic at the house of one of the members.  This year we had it at Sue's house in Arlington.  This tradition has been going on since I joined the club several years ago.  One year it conflicted with a funeral I attended, but I rode the scooter to the funeral in a dress suit, then stopped by Russ' house on the way home to join in on the fun.

A few days before the party, I got a call from my friend Jim Mandle.  Jim lives in Hernando, about 120 miles southwest of Jacksonville.  He wanted to come up to the gathering but was going to drive because of he would have to get home in the dark.  I offered for him to stay with me so he rode up, catching some rain around Starke.

But he made it and we enjoyed the visit.

This year it coincided with Boris' 50th birthday.  Sue made him a cake to help celebrate.

We all had a nice time and made it home safely.
